Conference Registration- Postponed!

As a result of the recent outbreak of COVID-19, we have regretfully decided that the most responsible course of action is to postpone the Canadian Cohousing Conference.
As the situation is changing on a daily basis, it is not possible to say at this moment when the conference will be rescheduled, but we are working actively to determine the best time and will provide you with regular updates as soon as we know more.
If you have already registered for the conference, you should have received an email with instructions.
If you haven't yet registered- stay tuned!  We will post updated information as it becomes available.
Feel free to contact us with any questions!

morning tour:
cranberry commons & quayside village
  • Running from 9 am to 1 pm, the Morning Tour includes tours of Cranberry Commons Cohousing (Burnaby) and Quayside Village Cohousing (North Vancouver), and view of Driftwood Village Cohousing (currently under construction)
Morning workshop:
power & leadership in cooperative groups
Running from 9 am until noon, the Morning Workshop covers "Power & Leadership in Cooperative Groups", presented by Laird Schaub.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
  • Many people have the naive dream that power will be uniformly distributed in community life. It ain’t so. One of the most tender and challenging topics for cooperative groups is the perception that someone in the group has misused their power or been a poor leader. In this workshop we'll unpack why this happens and what you can do about it. Power is not inherently good or bad—it depends on how it’s used. It is also never evenly distributed. Can your group talk about power openly? Has your group defined what qualities are wanted in people serving in leadership roles? Is there a healthy balance between how leaders in your group are appreciated and how they’re criticized? While it can be difficult to do these things well, ignoring them is worse.
AFTERNOON tour:
windsong & vancouver cohousing
  • Running from 1:30 to 5:30 pm, the Afternoon Tour includes tours of Windsong Cohousing (Langley) and Vancouver Cohousing (Vancouver), and view of Little Mountain Cohousing (currently under construction)
afternoon WORKSHOP:
consensus challenges: why many groups stumble
Running from 1:30 to 4:30 pm, the Afternoon Workshop covers "Consensus Challenges: Why Many Groups Stumble", presented by Laird Schaub.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
  • For those of us who were raised in the competitive mainstream culture—which is just about everyone—consensus is an unnatural act. Learning to be cooperative requires unlearning being competitive. The bad news is that it takes personal work and dedication to effect that transition. The good news is that it’s possible. We’ll focus on a handful of problem spots in this workshop:
    • Developing the capacity to work emotionally
    • Committing to the discipline needed for meetings to be successful (Hint: meetings are not open mic)
    • Appreciating that product and process need to be allies, not enemies
    • Defining what’s plenary worthy and learning how to sequence an issue effectively
    • Understanding the many ways that people differ—what can be done to level the playing field and what are the limits of diversity
    • Not being too proud to ask for help

Registration FAQs

  • Send us an email at canadiancohousingconference @ gmail.com if you have any questions!
Will the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) impact the conference?
  • As of March 11th, the Public Health Agency of Canada has "assessed the public health risk associated with COVID-19 as low for the general population in Canada but this could rapidly change".
  • The conference organizing committee recognizes that the situation is changing quickly, so we are following BC CDC and Government of Canada recommendations, including risk-informed decision-making for mass gatherings.
  • At this time, our conference does not fall under the highest risk factors (e.g. we don't expect any attendees from the highest risk areas, and we expect less than 300 people in total), and we are working with our venue to address risks (e.g. increased access to hand washing stations, configuring rooms to increase space between people).
  • That being said, we will also rely on the cooperation of conference attendees to help with risk mitigation strategies (e.g. personal protective practices, staying home if you feel sick).
  • As the situation evolves, we will keep conference attendees updated via our website, but as of March 11th, it appears reasonable to proceed with the Canadian Cohousing Conference as planned.

On Friday, can I mix and match morning and afternoon tours and workshops?
  • Yes, we have planned the schedule so you can do two workshops, two tours, a tour followed by a workshop, or vice versa.  Attending both tours will give you the shortest turnaround time over lunch (only 30 minutes).
Do I need to pre-select or register for conference sessions on Saturday and Sunday?
  • No! Once you're registered, you're free to attend any of the conference sessions on Saturday and Sunday, and there is no need to commit in advance.
How do I qualify for the "cohousing member" rate?
  • If you're a member of a cohousing group that is a member of the Canadian Cohousing Network (or CohoUS for Americans), you qualify for the member rate.
Do we need to be a cohousing group to qualify for the $800 package of 5 conference registrations?
  • No.  If you're a group of 5 friends, 5 co-workers, or just 5 people curious about cohousing, you can buy a package of 5 conference registrations.  However, we do need the names of all 5 people at the time of registration.
Will there be discounted early bird rates?
  • Yes! Discounted early-bird rates are available as of February 1st, until March 10th, for a limited number of registrations.  Even if you miss the early bird, the best deal on registration is to buy a group of 5 tickets for $800.
Why are registration fees non-refundable?
  • To keep registration as affordable as possible, we are unable to offer refunds.  If you wish to change your registration to another person, please contact us with their name and contact info.
Why are registration fees lower for existing cohousing members?
  • Similar to most conferences, a higher registration rate applies to registrants who are not members.  This creates an incentive for existing cohousing members to attend, and we know non-members will still get a lot of value for their registration!
Why can I only register one person at a time?
  • Our ticketing software only collects information (e.g. name, contact info, dietary restrictions) for one person per order, so we need each person to register separately.
